Researcher Mentor
The purpose of the Researcher-Student mentoring program is to bring together biomechanics students and established biomechanists in order to enhance the knowledge and technological skills of young biomechanists and help to shape the next generation of the finest biomechanists and biomechanics research.
Research mentors must be an ISB member, a research scientist or a postdoctoral fellow. To become an ISB member, please visit the Membership page. Please read the information at the bottom of the page on how to sign up to become a mentor.
Research mentors will assist student members by agreeing to:
- Allow occasional communication over the phone or emails.
- Answer questions and discuss topics in biomechanics, especially the mentor’s area of interest.
Optional/suggested assistance provided by research mentors:
- Provide students with information about fellowships or internships offered by the mentor or mentor's department.
- Review manuscripts and proposals in confidence.
- Optional: Allow students to visit the mentor's laboratory for short periods of time that would be convenient for both the student and the mentor. These visits should be for training purposes such as learning new methods or techniques in specific areas of biomechanics.
Mentor assistance is not limited to the above recommendations nor are all of the above recommendations required by the mentor. The nature or purpose of the mentoring relationship should be discussed and agreed upon before mentoring begins.
Student Mentor
The purpose of the Student-Student Mentoring Program is to establish relationships and share experiences with other students in the field.
Student mentors must be an ISB member, a graduate student or a postdoctoral fellow. To become an ISB member, please visit the Membership page. Please read the information at the bottom of the page on how to sign up to become a mentor.
A Student Mentor will assist student members by agreeing to:
- Allow communication over the phone or emails
- Writing abstracts or award application materials
- Translating abstracts or other written materials into the language required by the conference
- Be a guide to students attending his or her first conference
- Give advice, recommendations and tips about traveling to other countries
Student Mentors assisting students traveling to other countries will:
- Answer as best as possible any questions posted by the mentee that will help him/her to better prepare for the overseas visit.
- Provide information about the safety of the country/city to visit, housing, transportation, food, and others as requested by the mentee.
- Provide any other information or advice that the student mentor would consider important in visiting the specific region (housing, transportation, culture shock, do’s and don’ts, etc).
Student mentors are also eligible to simultaneously participate in the Researcher-Student Mentoring Program as a mentee.
How to Become a Mentor
All mentors must be current ISB members. To become an ISB member, please visit the Membership page.

In order to sign up to become a Researcher or Student Mentor, please follow these instructions:
- Login to the ISB website. Under “My Profile" on top right
- Click on the Edit button to update your profile
- Click on the mentoring tab
- Select the type of mentor you would like to become
- Complete research interests information
